With Korea's top LNG business capabilities and infrastructure, SK Innovation E&S will complete the hydrogen value chain including the production, distribution, and consumption of clean hydrogen to become a global leader in the hydrogen energy field.
SK Innovation E&S built the world's largest hydrogen liquefaction plant (annual capacity: 30,000 tons) on about 50,000㎡ of land inside SK Incheon Petrochemical Plant. Since it is the only hydrogen liquefaction plant located in the metropolitan area in Korea, it is able to transport and supply economically to the metropolitan area, which is the main demand.
SK Innovation E&S is liquefying byproduct hydrogen produced by SK Incheon Petrochemical and supplying liquid hydrogen to all parts of the country, including the Seoul metropolitan area, from 2024.
When gaseous hydrogen is cooled to -253°C and liquefied, the mass is down to 1/800, which makes storage and transportation of hydrogen much easier, more efficient and more economically feasible.
SK Innovation E&S is considering an expansion into the blue hydrogen business from a long-term perspective. Blue hydrogen is produced from natural gas, with carbon captured and removed during the hydrogen production process, making it a clean form of hydrogen. We plan to build a blue hydrogen plant near the Boryeong LNG terminal, using natural gas produced from the Barossa gas field as feedstock.
By utilizing the renewable energy infrastructure secured by SK Innovation E&S, we will actively promote the green hydrogen production business, including the introduction and operation of domestic electrolysis facilities, and ultimately establish a carbon-free and eco-friendly hydrogen value chain.
